BASICS OF TACKLING
JAB TACKLING
DEFENSIVE PRESSURE
JAB TACKLE
Player should be approx. 1,5m – 2m away from opponent.
Safe distance means you are able to recover
Used as a delaying tactic or to dispossess opponent, as well as getting him/her to lift his/her head.
This tackle is used in the higher (attacking) areas of the field.
TECHNIQUE
The stick is held close to the body, with both hands, protecting the feet.
The stick is jabbed out (sharp movement) towards the ball, with the left hand and left foot.
In a sharp movement, withdraw the stick to the original grip, once again protecting the feet
JAB TACKLE - BODY ALIGNMENT
BLOCK TACKLE
Player should be approx. 1,5m – 2m away from opponent.
Safe distance means you are able to recover
Used to dispossess opponent.
This tackle is used in our defensive areas of the field.
Footwork is crucial; do not get the feet square!!!!!!!
BLOCK TACKLE TECHNIQUE
Body position should be well-balanced, low centre of gravity.
Left foot should be in front of the right foot.
Align your body with your right shoulder in line with the opponent’s right shoulder.
The left foot lunges forward, with the hand/hands following. (2 hands are stronger, but = less reach)
The face of the stick is angled towards the ball, with the stick low to form a “wall”.
NB: Timing is crucial. Do not attempt this tackle when the opponent is fully in control of the ball and aware of all his/her options.
Get them to lift the head by engaging them at a safe distance, then attempt the tackle. Always come forward in the tackle!
